subRosa: CONES OF RESPECT
Dear Friend: We are sending you this invitation to acknowledge the ways
in which you and your work have inspired us, helped us, and given us joy.“The Way That We Rhyme: Women, Art & Politics” opens at the Yerba Buena
Center for the Arts in San Francisco on March 28, 2008. In the words of
associate curator Berin Golonu, “the exhibition showcases the
politically charged work of a new generation of women who use creativity
as a form of empowerment and a means for making social change.” The
title of the show is derived from the Le Tigre song “Hot Topic,” whose
lyrics include shouts of homage to people of inspired feminist art and
action.subRosa is creating a performative installation for the show that images
two rafts that function as literal and metaphoric feminist platforms and
laboratories for hospitality. A raft can be an oasis, a refugia, a
floating survival garden, a launch pad for political action, a vehicle
for navigating waves of resistance and struggle.Consistent with the theme of navigation, action, and movement, we will
also install a buoy/lighthouse communications tower to transmit messages
coming in from all over the world. These messages will be inscribed on
paper cones of respect folded in the form of small satellite dishes.*We invite you to participate by completing one or more cones, and
returning them to subRosa by March 20, 2008 through email or surface mail. What we are looking for: Shout-outs, messages of homage, respect,
praise, and hailing to those who have inspired and sustained your ideas
of feminism.Format: Cones can be hand-painted, lettered, collaged, or imprinted with
digital images. Keep in mind they need to be lightweight and flexible
enough that the tab will fit through the slot and hold the cone to its
shape. Your cone and many others will be displayed close together with
the concave side facing out.How to participate:
